Marigold
10x15cm
oil pastel on buff coloured card
by Marigold Plunkett
Marigold’s practice centres on the expressive potential of the portrait, working mainly in intaglio printmaking and oils she uses the portrait to investigate those human dualities that tread a fine line between exquisite happiness and exquisite pain.
Her enduring curiosity with portraiture is in its ability to express so much of the human condition without words, yet there is still as much hidden in a portrait as revealed. The portraits Marigold produces are primarily of herself, or her close family. These close subjects give her the freedom to explore the role of the female gaze uninhibited by other peoples expectations.
Marigold graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, UAL, in 2020 with an MA in Printmaking. She won the Founders Choice in the annual Ingram Prize and was selected for the INGdiscerning Eye exhibition.
Her recent oil pastel portraits attempt to capture the strength and endurance her children have shown in the face of the turmoil and unpredictability thrown at them over the past year.
